Cordyceps Sinensis (Tcm) for Kidney Health

Preliminary evidence 6 studies

Research suggests that Cordyceps sinensis and related fungal species may offer protective effects on kidney health, particularly in the context of diabetic nephropathy and chronic kidney disease, based on preclinical animal studies. A 2022 rat study found that Bailing Capsule, derived from Cordyceps sinensis, improved markers of kidney function and reduced fibrosis by activating a fat metabolism pathway called PPARα, while a 2011 rat study found that Cordyceps cicadae extracts reduced kidney scarring through suppression of the TGF-β1/CTGF pathway, with results comparable to a commonly used prescription kidney-protective drug in some measures. The available evidence is limited primarily to animal models, with no human clinical trials directly examining kidney outcomes in the studies reviewed, and the remaining studies in this collection address other areas such as sleep, lung disease, obesity, and anti-aging pathways rather than kidney health specifically. These findings provide a preliminary biological rationale for further investigation but cannot be used to draw conclusions about effects in humans.
