Copper for Antioxidant Support

Preliminary evidence 18 studies

Research suggests a nuanced and largely indirect picture when it comes to copper's role in antioxidant support. The most directly relevant human study — a small observational study of 29 hospitalized children — found that copper levels were lower during active illness and rose alongside recovery, though this correlation does not establish that supplementation would be beneficial. A post-mortem brain tissue study found that copper deficiency impairs the proper functioning of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), an important antioxidant enzyme, and that insufficient copper loading may contribute to the enzyme's misfolding and loss of protective function, pointing to copper's mechanistic role in cellular antioxidant defense. However, a Mendelian randomization study — which uses genetic data to reduce confounding — found no meaningful evidence that genetically predicted higher copper levels protect against COVID-19 outcomes, and a cell study on copper-induced cell death (cuproptosis) found that antioxidant interventions may work by reducing copper uptake rather than by neutralizing oxidative byproducts, complicating how researchers interpret copper-related antioxidant findings. The available evidence is largely observational, mechanistic, or exploratory rather than drawn from controlled human trials, and several studies involve non-human models or ecological organisms, limiting the conclusions that can be drawn about copper supplementation for antioxidant support in people.
