Collagen for Muscle Strength And Growth

Preliminary evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that collagen plays a structural and regulatory role in the tissues surrounding and supporting skeletal muscle — including tendons, the extracellular matrix, and connective scaffolding — rather than directly stimulating muscle growth in the way that proteins or anabolic compounds might. Studies, primarily conducted in animal models, indicate that specific collagen types such as collagen XII are intrinsically necessary for normal tendon mechanical function and grip strength, and that collagen scaffolds can facilitate some degree of muscle tissue regeneration following severe injury, though the extent of functional recovery remains modest. One study found that abnormal accumulation of collagen VI in muscle tissue actually impairs movement and causes dysfunctional muscle enlargement, underscoring that collagen's relationship with muscle health is a matter of careful balance rather than simple abundance. The available evidence consists largely of preclinical animal studies and mechanistic investigations rather than human clinical trials, and none of the reviewed studies directly tested dietary or supplemental collagen on muscle strength or hypertrophy outcomes in humans, so conclusions about practical supplementation remain limited.
