Collagen Peptides (Food) for Gut Health

Preliminary evidence 13 studies

Research suggests that collagen peptides may support gut health through several mechanisms, with the most directly relevant evidence coming from two preclinical and mechanistic studies. One study found that a fish collagen peptide supplement reduced intestinal inflammation in a mouse model of colitis and shifted immune cells from IBD patients toward an anti-inflammatory profile, while a separate genomics-guided study showed that bacterially processed collagen peptides in a specific size range activated a gut receptor involved in intestinal epithelial repair. The remaining studies provided in this collection largely examined unrelated topics — including skin microbiome geography, parasitic gut infections, Parkinson's disease and the gut-brain axis, and airway bacteria — and do not contribute meaningful evidence regarding collagen peptides and gut health. Overall, the current body of directly relevant evidence is limited to animal models and cell-based research, meaning findings are preliminary and cannot yet be extended to reliable conclusions about effects in humans.
