Coconut Oil for Cholesterol Management

Moderate evidence 14 studies

Research suggests that coconut oil has a consistently documented effect on raising both LDL ("bad") and HDL ("good") cholesterol, a pattern that emerges across multiple meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and a randomized controlled trial spanning from 2016 through 2024. Studies indicate that compared to unsaturated vegetable oils such as olive, canola, or safflower oil, coconut oil tends to raise LDL cholesterol to a greater degree, which is a recognized cardiovascular risk factor, though it generally performs better than butter in this regard and appears particularly effective at raising HDL cholesterol relative to other fats. The evidence base includes 14 publications ranging from individual clinical trials to umbrella reviews pooling dozens of meta-analyses, and while the direction on LDL is fairly consistent, the overall cardiovascular picture remains mixed because no long-term randomized trials have yet examined whether coconut oil consumption actually increases or decreases heart disease risk, and the metabolic properties of its dominant fatty acids — particularly lauric acid and medium-chain triglycerides — continue to be debated. Researchers across multiple reviews note that study populations, oil types, and comparison fats vary considerably, that much existing evidence is rated as low to very low certainty, and that larger and longer-duration trials are needed before firm conclusions about coconut oil's net effect on cardiovascular health can be drawn.
