Studies indicate that bioactive compounds in cinnamon — particularly cinnamaldehyde and various polyphenols — may reduce inflammatory signaling through multiple pathways, including interference with immune receptors like TLR4, modulation of macrophage activity, and effects on circulating inflammatory molecules in the blood. One systematic review of 70 studies on Ceylon cinnamon, a 2023 animal study on polyphenol absorption, and a 2020 systematic review of rheumatoid arthritis trials all point in a supportive direction, with the rheumatoid arthritis review noting moderate-strength evidence for cinnamon alongside other spices in reducing disease activity scores. However, important limitations apply across this body of research: much of the evidence comes from in vitro and animal experiments rather than rigorous human trials, clinical studies vary widely in cinnamon species, extract type, and dose, and reviewers consistently emphasize that well-controlled human trials are still needed before firm conclusions about cinnamon's anti-inflammatory effects in people can be drawn.
