Choline for Memory

Moderate evidence 40 studies

Research suggests that choline and its related compounds — including alpha-GPC, citicoline, and dietary choline from food sources — play a meaningful role in supporting memory and cognitive function, largely through their relationship with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Studies indicate that this evidence spans multiple study types, including a randomized controlled trial finding that citicoline supplementation improved episodic memory in older adults with age-related memory impairment, a 2023 comprehensive review concluding that various choline forms support memory across preclinical and clinical research, animal studies showing that alpha-GPC reduced stress-induced cognitive impairment, and an observational cohort study linking higher egg consumption — with choline as a partial mediator — to reduced Alzheimer's dementia risk in older adults. The mechanistic picture is further supported by research on how cholinergic neurons in the brain flag novelty and support memory formation, and how their loss appears central to the cognitive decline seen in Alzheimer's disease. However, some findings are mixed or preliminary — a cross-sectional study in individuals with phenylketonuria found choline intake was only relevant to working memory in a specific metabolically controlled subgroup, a prenatal choline feeding trial protocol is still awaiting results, and a large cardiovascular meta-analysis raised a modest concern about dietary choline and cardiovascular risk — meaning the full picture of choline's cognitive benefits and potential trade-offs across diverse populations continues to be investigated.
