Chlorella for Cholesterol Management

Moderate evidence 7 studies

Research suggests that Chlorella supplementation may have a beneficial effect on cholesterol management, particularly in reducing total cholesterol and LDL-C levels, with this finding supported by at least two independent meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials published in 2018 and 2022. Studies indicate additional potential effects on triglyceride levels, and preclinical work in cell and animal models provides some mechanistic context, including prevention of triglyceride accumulation in liver cells and amelioration of radiation-induced lipid disruption in rats. However, one systematic review characterized the evidence as producing controversial results, suggesting that findings across trials are not entirely consistent, and the inclusion of animal studies from poultry research means not all evidence translates directly to human health outcomes. Overall, the human clinical evidence leans in a supportive direction, though the mixed findings in at least one systematic review indicate that more research may be needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
