Chamomile for Sleep Quality

Strong evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that chamomile may offer modest benefits for sleep quality across a range of populations and delivery methods, with the evidence drawing from two meta-analyses, multiple randomized controlled trials, and several reviews collectively covering oral supplementation, chamomile tea, and aromatherapy approaches. Both meta-analyses found statistically significant improvements in overall sleep quality as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and individual trials in elderly nursing home residents, young adults with insomnia, postpartum women, and clinical patients have reported similar positive findings, pointing toward a reasonably consistent signal across different contexts. Studies indicate, however, that the benefits appear more reliable for subjective sleep quality measures than for objective outcomes like total sleep duration or sleep efficiency, and where chamomile was combined with massage, touch alone may have contributed meaningfully to the results, making it difficult to isolate chamomile's specific effect. Across the literature, researchers consistently note limitations including high variability between studies, small sample sizes, reliance on self-reported measures, inconsistent product quality, and a general need for larger and more rigorously designed trials before firm conclusions can be drawn.
