Cat's Whiskers (Java Tea) for Urinary Tract Health

Preliminary evidence 20 studies

Research suggests that Cat's Whiskers (Orthosiphon stamineus/aristatus) shows consistent support across a range of preclinical and limited human studies for several aspects of urinary tract health, including diuretic activity, prevention of bacterial adhesion in urinary infections, kidney stone dissolution, and protection against uric acid-related kidney damage. The body of evidence draws primarily from animal studies and in vitro experiments, with one notable 2023 human volunteer study demonstrating that Java tea intake produced antiadhesive activity against uropathogenic E. coli in urine, lending some clinical plausibility to findings from laboratory models. Studies indicate that multiple mechanisms may be at work, including increased urinary electrolyte excretion, inhibition of crystal formation, reduction of uric acid levels, and anti-inflammatory activity, with polymethoxylated flavones identified as likely active compounds in at least some of these effects. One study introduced a note of caution, finding that while one extract offered moderate protection against drug-induced kidney toxicity, another extract appeared to worsen it, underscoring that the overall evidence, though directionally supportive, remains largely preclinical and that results across different preparations of the plant should not be assumed to be uniform.
