Brazil Nuts for Anti-Inflammatory

Moderate evidence 9 studies

Research suggests that Brazil nuts may offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, supported by a collection of animal studies, narrative reviews, and one randomized controlled trial, though the overall picture is mixed. Several animal studies found that Brazil nut consumption reduced markers of inflammation and oxidative stress, including in models of kidney injury, and one study using compounds derived from Brazil nut oil reported notable anti-inflammatory effects in zebrafish. Reviews of the broader nut literature tentatively place Brazil nuts among varieties with potential for reducing oxidative stress, and a systematic review in kidney disease patients found some supportive signals for Brazil nuts specifically. However, a notable counterpoint comes from the one human randomized controlled trial included here, which found that consuming Brazil nuts with exceptionally high selenium content actually increased the gene expression of several pro-inflammatory markers in obese women, even without corresponding changes in blood protein levels — raising the possibility that very high selenium doses may have unintended effects in certain populations. Studies indicate that the evidence base remains limited by small sample sizes, reliance on animal models, and methodological inconsistencies, meaning firm conclusions about Brazil nuts as an anti-inflammatory intervention in humans cannot yet be drawn.
