Black Strap Molasses for Constipation Relief

Moderate evidence 7 studies

Research suggests that black strap molasses and molasses-based preparations have demonstrated promise as aids for constipation relief across several study types, including one randomized controlled trial comparing a black strap molasses syrup to a standard pharmaceutical laxative in children, as well as multiple retrospective studies examining milk and molasses enemas in pediatric emergency settings. Studies indicate that both oral and enema forms showed success rates generally comparable to conventional treatments, with one RCT finding no meaningful difference in effectiveness between black strap molasses syrup and polyethylene glycol over a one-month period, and enema studies reporting bowel evacuation success in roughly 88 to 90 percent of cases. The body of evidence is predominantly pediatric-focused, retrospective in design, and limited in scale, which means findings may not generalize to adults or other populations, and the RCT — while encouraging — was a single trial that would benefit from replication. One retrospective study also raised a caution worth noting: long-term, repeated enema use in a small group of patients was associated with a previously unreported pattern of colon changes and severe pain, suggesting that while short-term use appears well-tolerated, the implications of extended use remain an open question warranting further research.
