Black Seed (Nigella Sativa) for Immune Function

Preliminary evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that Nigella sativa and its primary active compound thymoquinone demonstrate broad immunomodulatory properties across a range of laboratory, animal, and limited clinical contexts, with studies indicating effects on innate immune activity, antioxidant defenses, inflammatory signaling, and antibody production. The body of evidence reviewed here includes in vitro cell studies, multiple animal models spanning fish, mice, and poultry, and several narrative and systematic reviews, the majority of which report supportive findings, though the direction is not entirely uniform. A systematic review and meta-analysis of animal studies found that black seed supplementation significantly enhanced humoral immunity, particularly IgG antibody levels, while having little measurable effect on cellular immune markers such as lymphocyte and white blood cell counts, illustrating that immune effects may be selective rather than broadly stimulating. A separate animal study using rainbow trout found mixed results, with some innate immune markers improving but no significant survival benefit following bacterial challenge, and reviews consistently note that despite promising preclinical signals, rigorous randomized controlled trials in humans remain limited, meaning current evidence is not sufficient to draw firm conclusions about immune benefits in people.
