Beets / Beetroot for Cognitive Function

Moderate evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that beetroot juice, as a source of dietary nitrate, may offer modest cognitive benefits in some contexts, though the evidence is inconsistent and the overall picture remains unclear. The available literature — spanning roughly fifteen studies including randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and animal research — shows scattered positive findings, such as improvements in reaction time, executive function, and memory consolidation in certain populations, alongside an equal number of null results where beetroot supplementation produced no meaningful cognitive difference compared to placebo. Studies indicate that older adults, overweight individuals, and those with type 2 diabetes may be among the groups showing the most detectable responses, while trained athletes and healthy young adults appear less likely to benefit, and findings in women specifically are notably sparse and largely negative. Limitations across the body of research are significant, including very small sample sizes, single-dose designs, varying nitrate concentrations, and differences in the cognitive tests used, all of which make it difficult to draw firm conclusions about whether beetroot genuinely improves cognitive function and, if so, for whom and under what conditions.
