Beets / Beetroot for Blood Circulation

Strong evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that beetroot juice, as a dietary source of inorganic nitrate, may support blood circulation through several mechanisms, with the most consistent evidence pointing to modest improvements in blood vessel function, blood pressure, and physical endurance — particularly in older adults and those with circulatory conditions like peripheral artery disease. The body of evidence reviewed here comes primarily from small randomized controlled trials, a systematic review of 12 trials, and a limited number of animal and observational studies, with several trials showing meaningful circulatory benefits while others found no significant effects on muscle blood flow, microvascular function, or blood pressure in healthy younger populations. Studies indicate that findings are meaningfully mixed depending on the population studied, the dose used, and the outcome measured — for instance, one trial found notable improvements in walking ability and muscle blood flow in PAD patients, while several trials in recreationally active young adults found no meaningful changes in muscle blood flow or cardiovascular parameters. A notable complication in interpreting the evidence is that at least one trial found circulatory benefits from nitrate-depleted beetroot juice comparable to the nitrate-rich version, suggesting that compounds beyond nitrate may also play a role, and most individual studies were small pilot trials that their own authors acknowledged as preliminary and in need of replication with larger samples.
