Beets / Beetroot for Antioxidant Support

Moderate evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that beetroot contains a rich array of bioactive compounds — particularly betalains, flavonoids, nitrates, and polyphenols — that demonstrate meaningful antioxidant activity across a range of laboratory, animal, and some human studies, with the evidence base consisting of two 2022 reviews, a 2021 review, a 2025 perspective review, a 2026 narrative review, several smaller experimental studies, and one small crossover trial in eight healthy adults. Studies indicate that both betanin and its heat-degradation products contribute to antioxidant effects, that fermented beetroot juice may enhance water-soluble antioxidant capacity in blood, and that red and high-pigment beet varieties outperform lighter varieties in standard antioxidant assays, with researchers proposing that multiple compounds likely work together rather than any single ingredient acting alone. The overall direction of the evidence is supportive, and reviewers have identified beetroot as a promising candidate for functional food and nutraceutical applications relevant to oxidative stress, inflammation, and related conditions including cardiovascular health, kidney disease, and cognitive decline. However, most of the human evidence remains limited in scale and rigor, one mouse study raised a cautionary signal suggesting beetroot juice may worsen airway inflammation under asthma-like conditions, and researchers consistently call for larger, well-designed clinical trials before firm conclusions can be drawn about the magnitude and consistency of these effects in people.
