Beetroot Juice for Anti-Inflammatory

Strong evidence 14 studies

Research suggests that beetroot juice possesses meaningful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, with evidence drawn from randomized controlled trials, animal studies, cell culture experiments, and multiple reviews pointing to benefits ranging from reduced vascular inflammation and improved blood flow to attenuated muscle soreness following exercise. The bioactive compounds implicated include not only dietary nitrates — which the body converts to nitric oxide — but also betalain pigments and other phytochemicals, with some studies noting that nitrate-depleted beetroot juice still produced anti-inflammatory effects, suggesting nitrate alone does not explain the full picture. However, the evidence is notably mixed in certain areas: a post-marathon metabolic recovery trial found no meaningful advantage over placebo, a study in type 2 diabetes patients showed minimal effects, and a broader review of exercise recovery supplements found that beetroot juice's anti-inflammatory benefits for muscle damage markers remain inconsistent and mechanistically unclear. Most studies are small, use varying doses and protocols, and many promising findings come from animal or cell culture models that have not yet been replicated in human clinical trials, meaning conclusions should be regarded as preliminary until larger and more standardized research is available.
