Hing (Asafoetida) for Respiratory Health

Moderate evidence 13 studies

Research suggests that hing (asafoetida) has a long-documented history of traditional use for respiratory conditions including asthma, bronchitis, whooping cough, and pneumonia, with modern pharmacological reviews identifying antispasmodic, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties in its constituent compounds that may help explain these traditional applications. The evidence base includes network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses identifying bioactive targets relevant to asthma, several narrative reviews cataloguing preclinical findings on bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effects, a review of Persian classical medicine supporting its historical role in asthma treatment, and a small number of randomized clinical trials suggesting that Ferula preparations may improve blood oxygen saturation and alleviate symptoms such as cough and dyspnea in COVID-19 patients. Studies indicate that sesquiterpene coumarins and volatile sulfur compounds, including hydrogen sulfide, are among the constituents of interest for antiviral and respiratory effects, with activity reported against respiratory syncytial virus and influenza in laboratory settings. However, the overall evidence remains preliminary — most mechanistic findings come from animal models and in vitro studies, clinical trials are few and small in scale, and rigorous human studies specifically targeting common respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis are largely absent, meaning firm conclusions about efficacy cannot yet be drawn.
