Arnica for Wound Healing

Strong evidence 16 studies

Research suggests that Arnica montana and related plant extracts have shown some promise in supporting wound healing processes, though the overall evidence base is mixed and comes with important caveats. Laboratory and cell-based studies indicate that Arnica preparations may upregulate genes involved in extracellular matrix production, reduce inflammatory markers such as TNFα and IL-6, and promote fibroblast and macrophage cell migration relevant to tissue repair, while a mouse study using Brazilian arnica extract found measurable improvements in wound closure, collagen production, and blood vessel growth. At the clinical level, one randomized controlled trial found homeopathic Arnica D4 comparable to diclofenac for reducing wound irritation after foot surgery, and a 2021 meta-analysis of 23 publications reported a small but borderline-significant benefit over placebo for surgical sequelae such as hematoma, though the authors acknowledged the evidence was modest and partly driven by lower-quality studies. It is also worth noting that one previously cited study on Arnica's effects on macrophage gene expression was formally retracted, and several reviews across this body of literature consistently emphasize that existing studies are often small, methodologically limited, or conducted in laboratory rather than clinical settings, meaning firmer conclusions about real-world wound healing benefits await more rigorous research.
