Arnica for Post-Surgery Recovery

Research suggests that Arnica may offer modest benefits for post-surgical recovery, particularly in reducing pain and speeding bruise resolution, though the overall evidence base remains limited and inconsistent. The available literature includes several small randomized controlled trials and reviews examining both oral homeopathic and topical herbal formulations across a range of procedures — including carpal tunnel release, rhinoplasty, tonsillectomy, and eyelid surgery — with most studies leaning in a supportive direction but at least one well-designed RCT finding no meaningful benefit from topical arnica ointment following blepharoplasty. A 2024 systematic review drawing on 42 studies similarly characterized the evidence as mixed, noting that while some trials report reductions in pain and inflammation, others show no significant effect, and nearly all are constrained by small sample sizes, varied formulations and dosing regimens, and methodological limitations that make it difficult to draw firm conclusions.
