Research suggests that Arnica montana has meaningful anti-inflammatory properties supported by a range of laboratory, animal, and clinical studies, with evidence pointing to its sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds as key contributors to effects such as reduced inflammatory cytokine levels, inhibition of NF-κB signaling, and suppression of COX-2 and 5-lipoxygenase activity. Studies indicate that topical arnica formulations may help reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation in post-surgical, post-traumatic, and musculoskeletal contexts, and a 2016 review concluded that cumulative evidence positions it as a potential alternative to NSAIDs for certain specific conditions, while a 2021 review similarly found promise across both acute and chronic pain scenarios. However, the overall body of evidence is uneven in quality and consistency — a 2024 systematic review covering 42 studies found mixed results across in vitro, animal, and clinical investigations, and a 2021 meta-analysis of homeopathic arnica preparations found only a small effect that narrowly missed statistical significance, with findings varying considerably depending on formulation type, preparation method, plant part used, and geographic origin of the source material. Readers should note that much of the supporting evidence comes from preclinical and animal models rather than large, well-controlled human trials, and that additional high-quality research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn about arnica's clinical effectiveness for inflammation.
