Alpha-Gpc for Memory

Moderate evidence 14 studies

Research suggests that alpha-GPC may support memory and cognitive function, with evidence drawn primarily from animal studies and a small number of human clinical trials. The body of work includes rodent experiments showing that alpha-GPC can counteract scopolamine-induced memory impairment, reduce stress- and seizure-related cognitive decline, and improve memory in aging and lesioned animals, with proposed mechanisms centered on increased acetylcholine availability and markers of neural plasticity such as BDNF in the hippocampus. One randomized controlled trial in older adults found improvements in verbal memory with choline supplementation though also noted some mixed findings on processing speed, and a non-blinded clinical trial in vascular dementia patients found alpha-GPC compared favorably to citicoline, though the open-label design limits confidence in those results. A 2023 review broadly supports choline compounds as a strategy for cognitive support, but the overall human evidence remains limited in scale and rigor, and several studies in the linked literature are unrelated to alpha-GPC or cognition, so readers should weigh the current findings with the understanding that larger, well-controlled human trials are still needed.
