Aloe Vera for Skin Health

Preliminary evidence 6 studies

Research suggests that Aloe vera and Aloe vera-based formulations may offer several skin health benefits, including improved hydration, enhanced wound healing, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory effects, and potential anti-aging properties, based largely on laboratory cell studies and animal models. Studies indicate that Aloe vera extracts and gel formulations can modulate molecular pathways related to skin barrier function, collagen production, melanin synthesis, and inflammatory signaling, and one herbal shampoo formulation study also points to possible antidandruff applications. However, the available evidence is predominantly preclinical in nature, consisting of in vitro cell line experiments, a roundworm photoaging model, and formulation studies, with limited human clinical trial data, and at least one study found that measurable antioxidant content in an aloe vera extract did not translate to functional antioxidant benefits in a 3D skin tissue model. Overall, while the early-stage research is generally supportive, significant limitations in study design and the absence of robust clinical trials mean that stronger conclusions about Aloe vera's effects on human skin health await further investigation.
