Agaricus Blazei for Immune Function

Preliminary evidence 5 studies

Research suggests that Agaricus blazei Murill may support immune function through multiple biological pathways, with laboratory and animal studies consistently showing enhanced activity in immune cells, including increased macrophage phagocytosis, elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine production, greater antibody levels, and higher T-cell counts. Studies indicate that specific bioactive components — including beta-glucan-rich extracts and novel peptides — appear to activate immune signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT/mTOR and to stimulate human monocytes and dendritic cells in ways that are partly distinct from, and in some cases comparable to, well-established immune activators like bacterial LPS. The available evidence base consists primarily of in vitro cell studies and animal experiments, with one narrative review of clinical trials in cancer patients noting potential benefits for immune markers and quality of life but concluding that the overall methodological quality of those trials was poor and that effects on meaningful clinical outcomes like survival were not clearly demonstrated. Taken together, the preclinical findings are consistently supportive, but the lack of well-designed human clinical trials means the translation of these effects to human health remains uncertain.
